This interesting volume is one of the foremost titles crafted by Frank Homer Curtiss during his life. Husband to the Blavatsky-adjacent founder of the Order of Christian Mystics, his views here are an amalgamation of Theosophical, Gnostic, Rosicrucian, and Hermetic materials- indeed, there is an entire section of poetry written purportedly by natural spirits (gnomes, sylphs, salamanders, and undines.) While it is quite short, this booklet manages to condense thousands of years of Chinese religious history into a very few pages- noting, of course, that its original format doubled the page length, as such literature tended to do in its era.

It traces the progression (if we may term it that) from ancestor worship and spiritism through Confucius, Taoism, materialistic movements, and the then-modern era. It's well written, although we may place it more with rigorous history than with stringently occult titles, as it contains a multitude of dates and spiritual developments.

This intermediate-length work is actually the third of three works written by Farnsworth over the course of a decade, containing various new age material from a surprisingly large number of sub-topics within the spiritual. It touches on Swedenborg, Blavatsky, levitation, the categorization of spirits and creatures, and many other tidbits. This book is an excellent primer on the Salem Witch Trials- it contains mostly a slew of primary source documents; letters from the era, trial proceedings, and- at the end- the culminating document which ended the era for good, namely the recanting and apology of the jury involved for having condemned innocent people to death. While I have strong opinions on the subject of why the trials happened (my theory is a fusion of the ergot, property, and social panic theories and accepts none completely) I kept my own words to a minimum and relegated them to the foreword.

Some of the claims made especially during testimony are bizarre in the highest degree- flying objects strange creatures, demonic sexual intercourse, and what we would now deem both ghosts and psychic attack. Some of the stories told are chilling, especially when one considers that most of the accused were tortured and mistreated, even if only about a tenth of them ended up actually executed.

This is a rather nice work that primarily relates to demons and demonology, from the particular perspective of the fire and brimstone Methodist path that, in the 19th century, was at war with spiritualism. In the foreword, I had to make it clear to the reader that as an occultist I reject some of the anti-spiritualist materials here, although the first sections primarily deal with fraud mediums and is accurate.

According to this work, many mediums and self professed clairvoyants are indeed contacting spirits- but those spirits are evil demons from Hell instead of the souls of the dead or elemental forces. The religious arguments made here simultaneously make it clear that some spiritualists are not evil but rather misled, even if they are still bound for Hell.

Andrew Jackson Davis, the author, wrote several works from the perspective of a clairvoyant. In this book he claims to have communicated with spirits and also to have seen the afterlife, which in his visions is rather varied, changeable, and wondrous, with rivers of light and many more wonders. For those intrigued by history it should be noted that this is one of the early works that would later form the backbone of eugenics-era philosophy without itself being eugenic in manner. Such philosophical writings would eventually give rise to the modern world.

This is an excellent book, full length and in depth, produced by Elliott O'Donnell, a rather well known figure from the era- indeed, I just got done editing another of his works on spirits.

The lore here takes, mostly, the form of various folk tales from various cultures as far ranging as the Netherlands, France, and Siberia- some of them are quite entertaining short stories, and the author (who claims to have experienced several phenomena spoken of herein) mostly stands aside in general approval of the idea of lycanthropes while the stories tell themselves verbatim.

It is at once an early example of pro-spiritualist literature and a brutal attack on then-mainstream religious sentiment regarding seances, ghosts, and other similar topics. Refuting the concept of Heaven and Hell in favor of spiritualist explanations, this book is one of a number of texts from the era which would lay the groundwork for the 1910s and 1920s explosion of occult societies that would recede only to give birth to the new age in the hippie era of flower children and apocalyptic atomic paranoia. This work is quite interesting and refers to various experiences and experiments performed by the author with regards to seances at the time for some years running. The main focal point is none other than the now infamous Anna Fay, was eventually outed as a fraud by Harry Houdini, among others- indeed not that many years after this work sought to use her as evidence of a spirit world.

Nonetheless it is of value- all the content connected just with the theoretical side of spirituality remains intact even to this day in a theoretical sense- although it is generally considered bunk because of its association with the same mediumship circles this work refers to. This is one of the stranger works of the early 20th century. Written by the famous DeLaurence, it seeks to teach the reader how to use crystal gazing to contact spirits and help people with various issues, and to impart the secret of telepathy. It also covers the use of the seance to contact spirits, among other tricks within the spirit realm (while considering these spirits to be very much hermetic in form; that is, the sylphs, undines, etc.)

While some of the practices here are related predominantly to DeLaurence advertizing his own goods and services, it is true that some of them remain in use, and are of occult interest to this day.

General Update: Spring!

I figured it was about time for another update; as spring marches along I'm already requisitioning materials for my garden, so those of you who enjoy that series will get some new footage soon- along with massive improvements.

On the literary side, I am now about 75% complete editing DeLaurences' odd work "The Mystic Hindu Test Book"- this work covers astral bodies, spirits, crystal gazing, seances, and more; it's quite good after the second chapter (up to that point it is self advertizement and run on sentences.) At around 130 or so pages, it will be an important work here.

After that, I figure on completing a couple other DeLaurence works; they're all of similar length and have various eugenic-era spiritual content revolving around eastern tradition, spirits, and the like. I also have two short herbals and need to contact my illustrator for those to be completed. As promised the Theurgia Goetia will also soon be edited. I figure I can complete seven new works by the end of May at current projections.

This work is something I do not necessarily agree with in an occult sense but, for historical reasons and because of its (extremely) interesting take on the Salem Witch Trials, it is certainly worthy of inclusion in the ever-expanding library of releases here.

Written by Putnam in the middle of the 1800s, it is notable in that it makes the claim (though not directly) of a new spirit age having dawned on the world in which spirits have begun to communicate with mankind in a manner not unlike the telegraph- predating theosophical claims of a similar nature by many decades. The author himself claims to have established the veracity of mediums and spiritualism personally, and remarks at length upon the different stages or categories of mesmerism and its abilities.

This extremely interesting work is sadly little-known despite its scope; several thousand years of human history and a dozen or so cultures, with all funerary rites they're associated with- from the memento mori and then-modern practices back through embalming, interring, or burning corpses.

The greatest part of this work is its general mention of the slow (or occasionally mono-generational) process of change over time as applied to funeral customs. Nowhere is this as intrinsic as with the black death and the necessity of abandoning more elaborate and single-member graves and services in favor of mass burial, water burial, and expedited blessings.
