John George Hohman's Pow Wows: An American Grimoire - Now Available!
John George Hohman's "Pow Wows" is one of the best occult texts I've edited. Dating to the 1820s, it was spawned by the Pennsylvania Dutch folk traditions of the era, and may be variously seen as Americana, German-derived occultism, a grimoire, or a snake oil combination of herbal and prayer book.
Within this edition I retained the publishers' inclusions (which Hohman did not write) because they were present in the first edition, but removed the long and largely pointless running index, which for some odd reason was at the end of the work when it ought to have been included as a condensed table of contents.
The material covers herbal medicine, folk healing, prayers and invocations, a few magickal formulae, the construction of a couple of simplistic talismans (on paper) and protective spells, as well as hex breaking.

Several Work Updates
Update 1: Hohman's Pow-Wows is rapidly approaching completion. The work is going much faster than the Fortune Teller did because of the English being so much closer to that used in modern speech. I have not yet decided whether to include or omit the publishers' added section (which dates to the original work but is not entirely of German/Pennsylvanian origin.)
Update 2: I am going to expedite the Ars Goetia if it is within my capability to do so.
Update 3: I will be editing and releasing the "Ophiolatreia."
Update 4: Sickness in Hell will be taking rudimentary form over the course of August and I hope to release it before Halloween. If not, it will definitely be done before December.
Update 5: I still have to release the Trinosophia of St. Germaine, the Magus by Francis Barrett, and a dozen other works. Whether even working at full tilt I can complete them all before 2017 is not certain; the last slew of works I released quickly were all shorter in length and all were edited into English before modernity- the Trinosophia has to be translated from French as the Petit Albert was (Hall's translation is copyrighted and flawed) and The Magus is quite long and detailed. Two more apocryphal works, and at least three more alchemical texts, as well as the booklet I possess on Hypnotism and Mesmerism will join their ranks also, along with Faust's "Black Raven."

Hohman's Pow Wows (or; Long Lost Friend)
Now that the Universal Fortune Teller of Mrs. Bridget is complete, it's time for a new edited work; and thankfully this time it's in semi-modern English and comes from the United States.
Hohman's "Pow Wows" has nothing at all to do with Mesoamerican ritualism; which is funny given the connotations of the title- instead, it's a fusion system between German ritualism (influenced, as I will explain, by French ritualism) and Americana, a Pennsylvania Dutch tradition from the dawn of the 1800s.
The work itself is about the same length as, and contains some material similar to, the Petit Albert of 1700s era French renown- in my estimation the French cycle has influenced the content of this work, based on its eerie level of similarity- although it is within the realm of possibility that the similarities are due to traditions which were simply popular enough to have spread around Europe; after all, there's no certainty that all content in the Petit Albert originated in France (indeed, it mentions Hungary and other regions explicitly for a few of its passages.) It's broken into similar sections and covers similar maladies such as the bite of mad dogs (rabies of course) and headaches, hysteria, and other conditions.
One part herbal, one part prayer/incantation booklet, and one part folkish tradition, this rivals the Petit Albert for "most in depth ritual system" I have ever edited. It is likely that I will list this with the grimoires, since that is essentially what it is, even if it is also technically a work of folk magick.
I expect that it will be around 110 to 120 pages when completed, and it's quite a nice work.

The Universal Fortune Teller of Mrs. Bridget - Now Available!
The 1790 Universal Fortune Teller is not attributed to Napoleon, although later works containing similar (and sometimes utterly plagiarized) content were. This text contains an elaborate backstory in which the editor claims to have obtained a manuscript from the thatched hut of an old wise woman who had recorded her occult findings in heiroglyphic form. Subsequent to cracking this mysterious code the work was then released.
It's fairly obvious that this backstory was an attempt to increase its circulation- but that doesn't detract from the work, which manages to cover astrology, palmistry, and other tricks, rites, and knowledge into just under 100 pages of content. The astrological system here goes well beyond the simple Zodiac and into terms and meanings as well as arcane minutiae.
With a slimmed down dream interpretation section and a buffed up card trick section, this work is comparable to Napoleon's Oraculum in style, minus, of course, the oracle itself. It is also a rather bawdy work, mentioning whoredom, vixens, cuckoldry, and adultery quite frequently in the divination-by-card section.

Work Begins on Sickness In Hell
It is finally that auspicious time at which a new work by yours truly joins the (rapidly growing) ranks of edited releases available here on this blog. "Sickness in Hell" is the name and splatterpunk is the game; think, "Morbid Stories" as one long work instead of multiple short stories.
Many years ago- almost a decade now- the rudiments of this novel began after I had a dream about eating a dehydrated fetus out of a wooden box full of dried apricots in a dilapidated, post-apocalyptic grocery store. After eating this strange sacrament (which I imagine must have been real in some other plane of existence) I became privy to looking beyond the psychological veil into a sort of weird hellish void full of depravity, death, terror, and perversion- and I enjoyed it.
The corpus of the writing is basically complete already. The first step is merely to delineate the chapters and write notes outlining the basic content, after which the story writes itself- when writing fiction, as opposed to nonfiction, I zone out and it becomes almost a form of automatic writing; I say almost, because I don't believe in actual channeling.
It's a novel-length work so it will take a bit of time, even if the twenty five original sections (technically chapters) are actually, technically, "done". Unfortunately, the resulting story jumped around and so I can only say that it is complete in a very technical sense.
The basic premise revolves around fungus capable of mutating DNA, factory farm contamination, Satan, and black magic. The entire work is the purest form of sickness and vile atrocity ever penned by a human being, and I take pride in the fact that a few people I showed some of the original sections got sick and began gagging.

From the Universal Fortune Teller (1790)
The 1790 version of the Universal Fortune Teller is indeed far stranger than the one I've already released which post-dates it by seventy years. One look at the content and you know you're not exactly reading something from modernity.
The work is substantially more dense than I originally predicted; the astrological content alone stretches well past 40 pages, and that's really only half the work. All told, it might approach or slightly exceed 100 pages in length with a modern format (bibliophiles will know, of course, that many works from the 1700s had what we would now consider tiny typesetting.) Take a look at this passage from the book:

All told, it might approach or slightly exceed 100 pages in length with a modern format (bibliophiles will know, of course, that many works from the 1700s had what we would now consider tiny typesetting.) Take a look at this passage from the book:
On
the seventeenth day the child that shall be born will be foolish to
that degree that it shall be almost unnatural, and thereby become a
great affliction to his parents. To go on messages this day is
unfortunate, yet to contract matrimony, to compound physical
preparations, and to take physic is good, but by no means let blood.
On
the eighteenth day the child that shall be born, if a male, shall be
valiant, courageous, and eloquent; and if a female, chaste,
industrious, and painstaking, and shall come to honor in her old age.
It is good this day to begin buildings; and to put out our children
in order to be brought up in learning. Have a care of being let blood
this day for it is very dangerous.
On
the nineteenth day the child then born, if a male, shall be renowned
for wisdom and virtue and thereby arrive to great honor, but if a
female, she will be of a weak and sickly constitution, yet she will
live to be married. This day they may bleed that have occasion.
These three short sections are from the end of the astrological work, regarding the birth of children at various stages of the lunar phases. As we see, bloodletting is encouraged according to the day, and what we term a "voyage" or "trip" is (and this is replicated in the work at least two other times) referred to as a "message." I am leaving some of the antiquated English intact in this work for stylistic purposes, where a modern individual will still be able to infer the meaning from context.
This work, oddly, appears to contain less of the "females are only interested in marriage and lovers" content than the 1860 version; indeed, some of the passages refer to women of a vaguely heroic or brawny constitution depending on the circumstance of their birth. This probably relates to the growing moralism of the mid 1800s as opposed to the lingering flames of the enlightened times of the 1700s and the philosophy from that same era.

Off Topic: Work Music!
Today is a bit of a slow day on the literary front because of other work I had to do; that doesn't mean I didn't wish to make a post here though. The preface of the 1790 Universal Fortune Teller is done (quite a feat because of the condition of the manuscript and the language used there) and I'm settling in to some wine and relaxation.
It seemed like a good idea to post some of the music I listen to while editing and writing; I would have embedded the links but it seemed easier to just link them normally.

Work Begins On 1790 Universal Fortune Teller of Mrs. Bridget
I have begun the editing process on the late 1700s Universal Fortune Teller; the forerunner of the 1860 work released by Tousey with the same title.
This version has an enormous astrological section which takes up about half the work and cuts palmistry down significantly. That being said, it's equally as good as Tousey's later version. However, it will take quite some time to edit; the manuscript is not easily legible and some content has to be inferred by context. Honestly, I prefer this older version as being more "original" within the convoluted interweaving of the "Oraculum x Fortune Teller" tradition.
I have completed and uploaded the files for both Agrippa's "Female Preeminence" and the Book of Tobit also, as both were short, quickly completed editions- they will both be available in the next two days.

Coming Soon: The Book of Tobit
Other than the Testament of Solomon, I haven't really touched on much Judeochristian material yet in my editing. That's about to change; the Book of Tobit is notable for those of us who are interested in the more mystic side of this otherwise rather mainstream spiritual system both for its strange ceremonial use of fish gall incense, and its treatment of the demon Asmodeus, here linked with lust as in virtually all later works.
An apocryphal work, it is present in some canonical compilations and absent from others (notably the KJV), the strange nature of the visitation of the archangel Raphael to Tobias, son of Tobit, makes it an interesting work.
I have finished editing this (rather short) work and will release it fairly soon, and then subsequently release two other Apocryphal works.

Aphorisms of Urbigerus: Now Available!
One of the foremost texts of alchemy, the Aphorisms of Urbigerus remains one of the better kept secrets of the tradition. Written in 1690 and originally of English manufacture, it contains a series of 100 short statements (technically 101 statements) on alchemy, and alchemical philosophy.
Referring often to the green dragon, the red lion, and other alchemical veils for simplistic chemical terms, it allows the reader, so it claims, to create three stages of purified mercury and several types of elixir- through both a long, proper method, and a shorter but less effective one. It combines the quite literal with the metaphoric in such a way that the modern reader can presumably determine what specific chemical processes are being used; as is not the case with at least half of all works of alchemy.

Three Treatises on Alchemy (Philalethes) - Now Available!
Philalethes delivers another expert work on alchemy here, in three parts:
1. The Transmutation of Metals: Mostly about extracting the "seed" of metals for alchemical use.
2. The Celestial Ruby: Various workings and processes with some philosophical content.
3. Fount of Chemical Truth: A strange work alluding to natural processes which are not entirely clear.
Regimen Sanitatis Salernitanum: Now Available!
Of all of the works I have edited this might be the most amusing. Written in the Medieval era, it was translated into English surprisingly early by John Harington in 1608.
Its content is one part herbal, one part dietary guide, and one part social tract. It praises sanitation, hand washing, and moderation in drinking, but also encourages the reader to clean their teeth by burning leek and henbane and directing the smoke into their mouth with a funnel (a potentially dangerous practice- henbane is a potent deliriant.)
With references to the four humors and bloodletting, it certainly gives a decent look at the general medical practice of the era; perhaps one part good suggestions to two parts utter madness. Nonetheless, the herbal and philosophical content makes it perfectly occult in manner.
24 pages.
Coming Soon: Female Preeminence by Agrippa
I never realized that Agrippa was fond of making social and behavioral statements until recently; best known for his triplicate work "Three Books of Occult Philosophy," this lesser-known work revolves around pagan imagery, the sacred feminine, and could be construed as the primitive forerunner of civil rights for women.
Mostly containing applause for women's fortitude and the image of the divine heroine, it's quite an interesting work and one I look forward to editing.

A Comparison Of Five Overlapping Occult Books
What follows is a comparison of five different occult works from two overlapping traditions; the Oraculum and the Fortune Telling hand guide. What might have otherwise been two disparate traditions overlaps so significantly that each time I encountered one of the texts I was surprised to a fairly large degree.
What culminates is a fusion and evolution of two literary traditions; the late 1700s fortune teller and the early 1800s oracle book. I intend to release an edition of Mrs. Bridget's Fortune Teller, although I am hesitant to bother releasing the second version of the Oraculum when Tousey's version is so much more interesting; the former version, from the early 1900s, is heavily stripped down.
It is worth noting a second layer of interesting comparison: Fortey released a work in 1860 alongside his version of the Universal Fortune Teller on dream interpretation containing a similar catalog of interpretations to the 1790 work of Mrs. Bridget, while there is also a work from 1823 which stylistically is almost identical to the Philosophical Merlin and also contains an expose on the meaning of moles on the body.

A Work of Saturn: Now Available!
Isaac Hollandus delivers again with one of the better alchemical works I have read.
Largely revolving around the use of lead for medical purposes (something I cannot recommend!) "A Work of Saturn" is a bit less veiled and difficult to understand than most texts on alchemy- Hollandus fails on only one account, for while referring to the lead of the philosophers as antimony, the text describes a process which quite clearly involves rudimentary, normal lead- as in, the toxic element, which Hollandus unwisely recommends the alchemist taste in order to make sure the process is working.
It is essentially one long process for distilling powdered lead to make elixir- the resulting material (a red oil from a strange sort of compounded mineral deposit) is said by Hollandus to allow the projection (multiplication) of metals, as well as being used in dissolved and ingested form to cure all ailments, or injected into wounds to resolve infections.
30 pages.
The Universal Fortune Teller: Now Available!
The Universal Fortune Teller of Fortey's fame is a work vaguely similar to Napoleon's Oraculum- containing some of the same material (in not quite the same form) a full 24 years before the Oraculum was crafted, adding several new elements to the work and removing several others.
This specific work revolves mainly around the reading of tea leaves, palmistry, and a section on charms and simplistic rituals mostly involved with love and marriage.
Indeed, the Fortune Teller is itself based upon a similar work from 1790 by some anonymous author called "Universal Fortune Teller: Mrs. Bridgets Golden Treasury." This latter text is attributed to the "Norwood Gypsy" and contains the same prognostication for children born on each day of the week (omitted from the Oraculum; but I added it back for continuity's sake) and a lengthy astrological exposition included in the Oraculum in modified form and absent from the 1860 Fortune Teller.
The convoluted and interconnected content of these three works, as well as the second version of the Oraculum is interesting enough to warrant a future post specifically delineating the content.

A Slew of New Work
Coming soon: Johannes Trithemius' "The Art of Drawing Spirits Into Crystals"- a sort of short-ish grimoire and similar in infamy and length to De Septum Secundeis- these two works form the twin counterparts to the Steganographia and never obtained the level of fame of this much longer, Latinized work. I have already fully edited this manuscript and it will be released in two days.
In addition to this July release, I am looking forward to another double release; the Universal Fortune Teller, an 1860 work similar to the Oraculum, and a work on mesmerism and hypnotism of note from the 1930s which I scanned from my very own collection.
In addition to these two notable works of paranormal Americana, I want to begin the Nigromancia as soon as possible due to its fame, alongside beginning Sickness in Hell; it needs to take rough form before October, which is for obvious reasons the best month for editing works of darkness.

The Mirror of Alchemy: Now Available!
The Mirror of Alchemy is one of those many alchemical works misattributed to an author who had nothing to do with the crafting of the work. Dating to no earlier than the 16th century, the Mirror is ascribed to Roger Bacon, who lived and died several centuries earlier.
This does nothing to denigrate the value of the work, however- here we have the most explicit and literal description of the basic tenets of alchemy; that the laboratory setup used to make elixir is as literal a representation of nature as possible- a graduated vessel resembling a triangular mountain, made of fired clay, the presence of argent vive and sulfur (oddly with little mention of salt) and other methods to create a universal medicine- the tincture of the philosophers, the dragon- the peacock-colored, shining substances of alchemical lore.

Napoleon's Oraculum - Now Available!
At long last one of the best writings ever made on the topic of fortune telling and divination is available. Having reviewed other variants of the work available for sale, they are all substantially more expensive and most are primitive facsimiles. My works are never facsimile copies and are always fully edited by hand. I'd by lying if I said I didn't feel proud of this slower, more thorough effort.
The Oraculum stands at 76 pages; some variants are longer because they're mostly filler or else contain the longer but less varied Oraculum of the 1890s- the latter version does not contain most of the vaguely folk-tradition spells and rites of this version. The 1884 Tousey version is also notable for its expansive section on dream interpretation; I happen to agree with most of his inclusions here over those made by new age groups and posted on the internet- his version of interpretation, whatever its source, is more authentic.
It's a fine work, made finer by being completely overhauled for a modern audience.
